Indonesia bolsters graft prevention in high-risk regional sectors

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Home Affairs Ministry has identified corruption-prone areas in local governments and pledged stronger prevention measures, including cooperation with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said Friday that prevention efforts would focus on areas vulnerable to corruption, speaking alongside KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto in Jakarta.

Regional governments face corruption risks in planning, budgeting, procurement, payments, personnel management, licensing, local revenue and assets, state-owned enterprises, grants and social assistance, Karnavian said.

The ministry identified persistent weaknesses, including mismatches between programs and plans, inflated budgets, rigged procurement tenders and inaccurate distribution of grants and social assistance.

Karnavian said the ministry had tightened oversight, including through large-scale briefings for newly inaugurated regional leaders.

The ministry also established the Monitoring Center for Prevention with the KPK, a regional government information system for local finances and digital monitoring of regional budgets.

It also cooperates with the Indonesian Ombudsman and the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform, Karnavian said.

“Following President Prabowo Subianto’s instructions, the Home Affairs Ministry is working with other institutions to maximize corruption prevention,” Karnavian said.

KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto said most local leaders arrested in sting operations came from regions with low scores in the prevention center and integrity assessment surveys.

“These scores are not mere numbers; they indicate persistent corrupt behavior and abuse of power,” Budiyanto said.

He praised the ministry for strengthening corruption prevention efforts and expanding outreach by visiting regions across Indonesia.

Deputy Home Affairs Minister Ribka Haluk previously worked with the KPK to gather regional governments from Papua for an anti-corruption awareness event.
